I have dreaded

this conversation

Knowing I don’t do drugs,

he tells me I should try ecstasy

Says everyone should try ecstasy

at least once—a bold assertion

I don’t believe anyone should try 

anything if they want for desire

But rather, the beauty of our lives 

is extracted from our choosing 

I ask if he thinks less of me,

even though I don’t of him 

He assures me, then insists

Says ecstasy makes you 

feel centered and serene

Connected to everything

There must be more ways 

to align with oneness 

than he realizes

But he doesn’t believe so 

Says ecstasy allows you to feel 

what spiritual masters attain 

after a lifetime of meditation 

A shortcut to contentment 

Holding him in my arms, 

I again tell him no

I have found my own way,

I am already there
